FRESNO (KMJ) — November’s battle for the 22nd Congressional District will have fewer contenders, but will remain split down party lines.
The six candidates vying for the job were whittled down to two following Tuesday’s primary election. Republican incumbent Devin Nunes received a 57.9% share, and Democratic challenger Andrew Janz received a 32% share; both will continue into the next round.
Knocked out of the running were Bobby Bliatout with 4.6%, Rico Franco with 3.3%, Brian Carroll with 1.3%, and Bill Merryman with 0.9%.
On Twitter, Andrew Janz thanked voters for their backing.
“This campaign has always been about the people of this district. I am so honored to have the opportunity to challenge our ineffective representative, Devin Nunes, in the general election. There is still much work to do between now and November.”
In a statement sent to KMJ News, Devin Nunes also expressed appreciation for the result.
“I want to thank the voters for reaffirming their support for the work we are doing on behalf of the San Joaquin Valley. I also want to thank our team that works hard all year delivering the best constituent services to our district.”
The pair will face off in the general election, scheduled for November 6th.
