FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — Opponents of Gov. Jerry Brown’s controversial fuel tax and vehicle fee increases are gathering signatures, for an initiative to repeal them.
Under the plan, fuel taxes will eventually rise by 19.5 cents per gallon, which the governor and legislative Democrats say will be used to fund road repairs.
However, Orange County Republican Assemblyman Travis Allen is among those trying to gather nearly 366,000 valid signatures, to place the repeal initiative on the 2018 ballot.
Proponents of the tax increases say they’re needed to repair badly aging roads and highways.
Those opposed, contend that they’re illegal, as side deals were made at the last minute, to secure the votes of lawmakers who were on the fence.
