FRESNO (KMJ) — A man is dead after Fresno PD says he stepped into traffic in Northwest Fresno Friday morning.
The call came in just before 2am, to a section of Shaw Avenue between Marty Avenue and Valentine Avenue. The road was closed off to allow officers to start the investigation, but is now open to traffic once again.
The Fresno County Sheriffs Office identified the man as Joshua Whittington, 26, of Fresno. Investigators say Whittington moved to the Central Valley about a year ago from North Carolina. He was found in the roadway when Fresno Police officers arrived.
“He was deceased, massive trauma to his body from being struck by a vehicle,” explained Lieutenant Joe Gomez.
Officers add that the 28 year old driver behind the wheel of the suspect vehicle remained on the scene to for questioning. Brokton Bakman is now facing felony DUI and manslaughter charges.
“The driver was traveling along west Shaw and the pedestrian was standing on the medium, and for some reason stepped into the path of the vehicle, stood there, and the truck hits the pedestrian and killed him.”
The motive behind what happened is still unknown.
