(KMJ) – Fresno Police were called to Fresno and Belmont just after 4 PM Sunday for reports of a man standing in the street armed with a knife.
Officers say the 9-1-1 caller stated the suspect pulled a knife on her husband in front of their house. The individual was described as a Hispanic male in his early 20s, wearing red clothing – and barking.
Units arrived in less than four minutes and confronted the suspect who was armed with a knife. The officers made repeated commands for him to drop the weapons, but he refused to do so. Then, the man walked out into traffic and stood near several vehicles which were stopped at the red signal light at Fresno and Belmont.
When the suspect came toward the officer in an aggressive manner while holding the knife, he fired two rounds striking the suspect in the abdomen.
Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer says this suspect is reported to be in stable condition, but has yet to be identified.
This incident was captured on the officers body worn camera video, as well as video contained from the Real Time Crime Center.
This is the eighth officer involved shooting this year compared to nine for 2015.
The officer involved in the shooting has been on the department for just over nine years. He will be placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
UPDATE: The knife-wielding suspect has been identified as 25-year-old Ryan Henry Frank. He has been charged with attempted armed robbery and assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer.
