FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — It was only a few years ago when it appeared that the West Nile virus was in check, with fewer than 160 cases statewide.
But with the drought, the number of cases tripled by 2012, and reached nearly 800 last year.
According to the Department of Public Health, 29 Californians died.
Now in our 4th year of the prolonged drought, the department fears 2015 could be even worse.
The devastating conditions leave pools of water, as opposed to flowing streams, which attract mosquitoes.
We’re being urged to remove all standing bodies of water around the house.
