By the numbers, California's high speed rail project is daunting. Its cost is 68 Billion dollars. And now you can add one more year to its construction schedule.
The new delay, says the California High Speed Rail Authority, comes from acquiring Central Valley land needed to build it. Right now the authority only has about 1/4 of the 540 parcels needed to complete the 29-mile stretch of track from Madera to Fresno.
The state says it is moving forward with the eminent domain to secure the needed land. And is working to reach settlements with those property owners.
The Rail Authority also says construction has been slowed by a slew of legal delays.
