VATICAN CITY, May 8, 2025 ~ Cardinal Robert Prevost has been named the new Pope, the first U.S.-born pope in history.
After less than two days of cardinal deliberation, Prevost, 69, has taken hold of the Papacy, taking the name of Pope Leo XIV.
The Chicago native was revealed as the 267th pontiff in front of hundreds of thousands of cheering Catholics in the Vatican.
Prevost is a dual citizen of both the United States and Peru, having served as an archbishop for nearly a decade in the latter. He was appointed by the previous pope, Pope Francis, to head episcopal appointments in the Vatican in 2023.
He is viewed as a political centrist, though he leans progressive on some social issues.
