(KMJ) A new tax proposal on sugary drinks being debated at the state capitol.
The bill announced this week comes from Assemblymembers Jim Wood (D-Healdsburg) Richard Bloom (D-Santa Monica) and David Chiu (D-San Francisco).
In a news release issued Wednesday, they say the “health impact fee” could raise more than $2 billion every year and the money would go to obesity prevention programs.
A similar bill was shot down in 2015 in committee. Critics and the soda lobby said taxing a can of soda by another 24 cents would hurt the poor and might not improve anybody’s health.
