Fresno City Councilman Miguel Arias is calling for an investigation after a city council candidate was arrested and later cleared of a DUI allegation.
Arias is questioning how information about the arrest of District 1 candidate Naindeep Singh was shared publicly before toxicology results were returned.
Singh was stopped in Fresno’s Tower District last Saturday for expired registration and arrested after officers said he showed signs of impairment during field sobriety testing. He maintained his innocence, and blood test results came back clean Tuesday, clearing him of any drug-related DUI allegations.
Arias says the City Council has not received a formal briefing on the incident and wants answers about how details of the arrest were communicated to the media. He’s asking whether any city employees, contractors, political campaigns, or outside groups were involved in sharing information.
At a Thursday press conference, Arias announced plans to seek an independent investigation, disclosure of political consulting contracts, preservation of records, and a public release of findings.
City Attorney Andrew Janz fired back, calling the accusations false and defamatory. Janz says he’ll ask the city to investigate Arias for possible interference with his office’s legal duties and potential Brown Act violations.
