FRESNO, CA (KMJ) The Fresno Chaffee Zoo is canceling plans for a Día de los Muertos celebration, citing concerns over the safety of immigrant families in the community.
In a statement, zoo leaders said canceling the event reflects their desire to stand in solidarity with the community and help ensure families feel safe.
The move comes as concerns continue over increased ICE enforcement activity and traffic stops reported in recent weeks.
While the celebration itself has been canceled, visitors will still be able to take part in Day of the Dead traditions. Special decorations, artwork, and two memorial altars will be on display from October 27th through November 2nd. Guests are invited to bring photos of loved ones or beloved pets to be honored.
The zoo says it made the difficult decision after discussions with community partners who serve immigrants.
