The American Lamb Board is investing checkoff dollars in research aimed at improving flock health, production efficiency, genetics, and lamb quality.
The board says strengthening the U.S. sheep industry requires more than boosting consumer demand.
Producers also need ways to control costs, improve productivity, and increase domestic production to take advantage of market opportunities.
Through the national Lamb Checkoff program, the board funds science-based projects intended to address challenges facing sheep producers and develop practical tools for their operations.
Research priorities include identifying management and nutrition strategies that improve production efficiency, developing genetic selection tools for traits such as growth and survival, and finding ways to reduce disease, parasites, and related production losses.
The board is also supporting work to connect breeding and management decisions with carcass performance and consistent lamb quality.
The goal is to help American sheep producers improve profitability and compete more effectively in the marketplace.
