FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — An ICE agent is in custody at a local hospital after police say he was shot after assaulting an elderly man and his daughter at a home in central Fresno.
The incident happened before 3:30 am Friday at a home on Dudley and Broadway.
The Fresno Police Department says a woman found 32-year-old David Gonzalez sleeping on her front lawn.
The woman told her 72-year-old father, who then went outside to tell Gonzalez to leave.
Once Gonzalez was woken up, police say he appeared drunk and assaulted the 72-year-old.
Police say the daughter tried to intervene to protect her father, and Gonzalez physically attacked her.
Fearing for their safety, officers say the 72-year-old man pulled out a gun and shot Gonzalez.
The woman’s boyfriend, who is a police officer and was off-duty, came to the home and put Gonzalez in handcuffs.
He was taken to the hospital for treatment and is listed in serious condition.
The elderly man who shot Gonzalez is not facing charges.
Gonzalez is now in custody for felony assault.
Authorities say he is a federal agent from Texas who is assigned to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Police are still investigating why he was in the neighborhood where he was ultimately shot.
Fresno Police sent an email to KMJ on Friday afternoon:
“There was no confrontation between the Fresno Police Department and ICE officials. ICE officials have been in contact with the Fresno Police Department to initiate their personnel investigation. The suspect remains in Fresno Police custody. No additional information or interviews will be provided.” -FPD
Fresno City Councilmember Mike Karbassi also released a statement on the incident:
FRESNO, Calif. — “I am deeply disturbed by the incident described by the Fresno Police Department involving an off-duty ICE agent accused of assaulting a 72-year-old man and his daughter outside their home.
“No family should have to endure violence on their own front lawn. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the victims and their family. I wish them a full recovery and recognize that the trauma of this experience extends far beyond their physical injuries. “While the investigation remains ongoing, the allegations are deeply troubling. Federal agents entrusted with enforcing the law must be held accountable when they are accused of breaking it. I appreciate the Fresno Police Department’s response and expect a thorough investigation.
“Enough is enough. We’ve endured days of fear-stricken enforcement that has now tilted into full-bore violence. I am calling on ICE to suspend its ongoing operations in the Central Valley. Our residents deserve safety, accountability, and peace of mind. Federal enforcement must never come at the expense of the communities it is supposed to serve.”
