MADERA, Calif. (KFSN) — A man is dead after Madera Police officers fired their weapons during an incident on Sunday afternoon.
Madera Police Chief Giachino Chiaramonte confirmed to Action News the shooting happened around noon at a home in the area of Kennedy Street, near Lake Street.
Chief Chiaramonte says at least three officers responded to a call of a man acting erratically, flooding and damaging the home. When officers arrived, the man had locked himself in a room and the family inside were able to get out safely.
Chiaramonte says officers determined no major crime had happened and their goal was to disengage. As officers were getting ready to leave, Chiaramonte says the man came out of the home and presented what appeared to be a firearm.
At least more than one officer fired their weapon at the man. Medical aid was then immediately given but the man died at the scene.
Investigators with the Madera County Sheriff’s Office, which has taken over the investigation, later determined the man had a replica gun.
The man has not been identified. Chief Chiaramonte only described him as a man who was allowed to live at the home.
The Madera Police officers who fired their weapons have been placed on administrative leave. No officers were injured in the incident.
The case will also go to the California Department of Justice, which is mandated under California Assembly Bill 1506. AB 1506 requires the DOJ to investigate all incidents of an officer-involved shooting resulting in the death of an unarmed person.
Residents are being urged to avoid the area as the investigation is expected to last at least six to eight more hours.
