A powerful nor’easter is hitting the U.S. East Coast with heavy rain, damaging winds, and significant coastal flooding, disrupting travel and daily life from the Mid-Atlantic to New England.
CBS News reports that around 100,000 customers across the region were without electricity Saturday as the slow-moving storm intensified. In Brooklyn, a 56-year-old man was killed after being struck by a falling tree. In Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey, emergency crews rescued nine adults and a dog from flooded motel rooms.
Coastal communities have seen some of the most serious conditions. Streets flooded in parts of New Jersey and Long Island, while Ocean City, Maryland, experienced heavy surf and beach erosion. Wind gusts above 70 mph were recorded in some areas.
The storm has also affected air travel and major events. Hundreds of flights were canceled or delayed, while concerts, festivals, and sporting events were called off or rescheduled.
Forecasters said the system could remain near the coast through Monday, extending the risk of flooding, strong winds and dangerous surf.
