(KMJ) One of California’s most notorious convicted serial killers has died behind bars.
State prison officials say Wesley Shermantine, one half of the so-called “Speed Freak Killers,” has died in prison at the age of 60.
Shermantine and childhood friend Loren Herzog were linked to a series of killings and disappearances in San Joaquin County and surrounding areas from the mid-1980s through the late 1990s.
Investigators believe the pair may have been responsible for at least 20 deaths. The two were arrested in 1999.
Shermantine was sentenced to death, while some of Herzog’s convictions were later overturned on appeal.
Herzog was paroled in 2010 and died by suicide two years later.
Shermantine had been moved from San Quentin following California’s death penalty moratorium and was serving his sentence at California State Prison, Sacramento.
