FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Fresno police have arrested a 19-year-old man in connection with a fatal shooting in Fresno’s Tower District that left 28-year-old Tyrone Miles dead.
Police identified the suspected shooter as Jeremiah Listman, who was arrested Monday morning at a central Fresno home and booked into the Fresno County Jail on a murder charge.
According to Fresno Police Chief Mindy Casto, Listman was already known to police and was one of the suspects in an April stabbing on the Fulton Mall. He was out on bond in that case.
Miles was shot and killed two weeks ago near the corner of Olive and Linden avenues in the Tower District after an argument broke out among a group of people. Investigators said they were able to identify Listman through surveillance video, police cameras and license plate readers.
For Miles’ family, the arrest comes amid ongoing grief over his death.
“To me that was my baby boy. That was my middle child, but that was my last son. That’s my heart, and now it’s gone.” – Roxanne Armstrong, Miles’ Mother
Family members described Miles as deeply loved and full of ambition.
“Goofy, mischievous, always had something to say,” said Andrew Smith, Miles’ brother. “Trying to get him to take out the trash and he would play lawyer with you for 10 minutes, and he could’ve done it already.”
Security video shows an officer rushing to the scene and attempting to save Miles after a gunshot was fired.
“He’s not going to hurt anybody anymore, and nobody else could get hurt,” Armstrong said.
Loved ones said Miles did not have any gang ties. They said that despite difficult periods in his past, he had been working to improve his life by focusing on music and business.
“He was doing his music; that’s what he really loved. It was his passion, his music,” Armstrong said.
“He was a bright star with a beautiful smile. Every day, I would give him a kiss and tell him I love him. He always said, ‘I love you too, Mom, ‘” Roxanne Armstrong, Miles’ Mother
Smith said the arrest is a step toward healing.
“It’s like a weight lifted off a little bit. It’s never going to be the same. But it does help,” he said.
Police said they have not recovered the gun used in the shooting. Investigators also said there is no evidence that Miles and Listman knew each other before the night of the shooting.
