FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Fresno police have identified the man who was shot and killed Thursday night outside a liquor store in northeast Fresno as 25-year-old Muhammad Muhtaraam-Conley.
Investigators believe an argument may have led to the shooting and are searching for the person or people responsible. Police are using surveillance video as they work to piece together details of the attack.
The shooting happened at about 10:30 p.m. in the parking lot of Bulldog Liquor near Shaw Avenue and Fresno Street. Police said they first received a ShotSpotter notification from the area and then learned that a person had been injured.
Officers arrived and found Muhtaraam-Conley suffering from a gunshot wound.
“They arrived and after arriving they made contact with an adult male who sustained a gunshot wound to his upper body,” Lt. James Rossetti of the Fresno Police Department said.
First responders transported Muhtaraam-Conley to Community Regional Medical Center, where he later died.
Police said the shooting occurred in front of the store in an area surrounded by businesses and gas stations.
“This is an area that obviously has gas stations and businesses. This is the only incident that I’m aware of in recent history of occurring over here,” Rossetti said.
Nearby businesses expressed concern about the violence. One nearby business said the neighborhood is normally safe and that it was the first time they heard of a shooting in the area.
“This shouldn’t be happening but it happens,” Rodriguez said. “Just be concerned of where your surroundings are at.”
As of Friday afternoon, Fresno police had not announced any arrests or released a suspect description. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Fresno Police Department.
