MORRO BAY, CA (KFSN) — A pilot was rescued from the Pacific Ocean after their plane went down following engine issues off California’s Central Coast on Tuesday evening.
The U.S. Coast Guard says it received a notification around 6:50 p.m. that an aircraft crashed around six miles northwest of Morro Bay with one person on board.
The FAA and NTSB have identified the aircraft as an MK-58 Hawker Hunter typically used for military training.
According to officials, the pilot reported engine issues and ejected themself before the plane crashed into the ocean.
The Navy rescued the pilot and their condition is unknown.
Both the FAA and NTSB are investigating the crash. The NTSB is expected to release a final report within three to six months.
All mariners on the water are urged to navigate the area with caution.
Anyone who sees any debris or pollution in the water is asked to report it to the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach.
