New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge is unlikely to play in the upcoming American League wild-card series against the rival Boston Red Sox.
“We’re planning on him not being a part of that,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone confirmed Tuesday.
The Yankees placed their captain and three-time league MVP on the 10-day injured list Saturday with what Boone labeled as a “moderate” right calf strain. Boone said Judge, 34, had a platelet-poor plasma (PPP) injection in his calf during Monday’s off day.
New York (89-66) finishes the regular season with a seven-game homestand, starting with Tuesday split doubleheader against the AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays (95-60).
After missing more than three months of the season due to a rib injury, Judge returned to the lineup on Sept. 8 and batted .174 (4-for-23) with one homer, three RBIs and 13 strikeouts.
Judge has appeared in just 66 games this season, batting .241 with 18 home runs and 41 RBIs.
The eight-time All-Star is a career .291 hitter with 386 home runs and 871 RBIs in 1,211 games with the Yankees since making his debut in 2016.
New York and Boston currently are set to clash in a best-of-three wild-card series starting next Tuesday, with the Yankees hosting as the No. 4 seed and the Red Sox as the No. 5 seed.
