CNN reported that the incident occurred during the war with Iran and involved intelligence produced with the assistance of artificial intelligence. According to the report, a Special Operations Command analyst used an AI chatbot to combine open-source information with classified signals intelligence. The chatbot incorrectly identified material listed in the ship’s cargo manifest.
The inaccurate findings were then formatted into an intelligence report and circulated through military channels. U.S. forces began preparing to intercept the vessel, with armed personnel getting ready to board and military aircraft already in the air.
Officials reviewed the intelligence before the operation moved forward and discovered the error, stopping the planned interception.
The incident has renewed attention on how generative AI is being used in military intelligence, particularly when information could influence decisions involving armed forces and international relations.
