FRESNO, CA — Fresno Chaffee Zoo is deeply saddened to announce that male Masai giraffe, Fenny, passed away on the morning of August 21st.
Fenny had been receiving treatment for a fracture in his left front hoof.
The Zoo’s Animal Care and Veterinary teams have worked diligently to care for the injury, including applying a “shoe” to his hoof.
During a necessary procedure to evaluate the hoof’s progress, complications arose under anesthesia and despite our team’s truly valiant efforts, Fenny passed away.
“This is a heartbreaking loss for our Zoo” -CEO and Zoo Director, Jon Forrest Dohlin.
“Fenny was a key member of our giraffe herd and has had a meaningful impact on the hearts of both staff and guests alike,” said CEO and Zoo Director, Jon Forrest Dohlin. “My very sincere condolences are with our teams who cared for Fenny every day and to our guests who interacted with him. He will be deeply missed by our entire community.”
Fenny has been a beloved member of Fresno Chaffee Zoo’s giraffe herd since his arrival at the Zoo in 2019 and served as an educational ambassador for his species
