MADERA COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) — UPDATE: The Madera County Sheriff’s Office says that 43-year-old Claudia Anguiano has been found safe.
The original story follows below.
Authorities have identified the man shot and killed by a Madera County Sheriff’s deputy Friday afternoon as 42-year-old Gregory Anguiano.
The Madera County Sheriff’s Office said Anguiano had a long criminal history that includes burglary, domestic violence and resisting arrest.
But investigators are now searching for 43-year-old Claudia Anguiano, who has been missing since June 15. Officials say she was last seen in Whittier in Southern California.
The sheriff’s office said the couple has a home in Fresno but is believed to be moving to Whittier.

The investigation began on Friday afternoon when the sheriff’s office received a call from a homeowner who had received alerts that someone was inside their house. Minutes later, another caller reported suspicious behavior nearby.
“A separate caller reported a man carrying a crowbar was charging at vehicles,” Pogue said.
A deputy responded and attempted to detain the suspect, identified as Gregory Anguiano. Authorities said a struggle ensued in the middle of the road.

“As the suspect was assaulting the deputy and attempting to remove her firearm, a heroic community member, actually several of them, stopped and assisted; ultimately, that deputy shot the suspect. Despite life-saving efforts, the patient died at the scene,” Pogue said.
Investigators later located Gregory Anguiano’s vehicle and cell phone in an orchard near the home where the incident occurred. During the investigation, they also discovered Claudia Anguiano was missing.
“Did Gregory pick up Claudia when she was released? At this point, we’re still following up and trying to make that determination,” Pogue said.

Pogue also said Gregory Anguiano had an extensive criminal history.
“(He) does have prior convictions: battery on a peace officer, domestic violence, arrested several times for burglary, resisting arrest, false identity of a peace officer,” Pogue said.
Whittier Police continue to assist the Madera County Sheriff’s Office in the search for Claudia Anguiano, as investigators work to determine the circumstances surrounding her disappearance.
