FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — A 3-year-old has died from their injuries after the Kia Optima they were riding in crashed into a blacked-out Toyota Camry on Highway 41 early Sunday morning, officers say.
The Fresno County Coroner’s Office confirmed the 3-year-old’s identity as Kendrixx Leavell of Hanford.
The California Highway Patrol received reports of a Toyota that stopped in the middle lane of southbound Highway 41, north of Highway 180.
The driver of the Toyota has been identified as 31-year-old Carlos Sandoval Jr. of Selma
As the disabled vehicle remained on the highway, a 33-year-old woman driving a Kia crashed into the back of Sandoval’s car.
Leavell was wearing a seatbelt but was not secured in a child safety seat.
The 3-year-old suffered major, life-threatening injuries and was rushed to the hospital, where he died days later on May 20.
A man who was a passenger in the Kia was also hospitalized with major injuries.
Sandoval was taken to the hospital, where he died.
The crash remains under investigation.
