FRESNO COUNTY, CA (KMJ) A young woman is dead and a Fresno County man is in jail after a DUI crash into the Friant-Kern Canal.
California Highway Patrol officers were called just after 11PM Thursday night to Jensen Avenue, east of Navelencia. A Dodge Challenger had gone off the roadway and into the canal.
Three people were inside the car. Two men managed to get out, but a woman in the back seat was missing. CAL FIRE crews later found her downstream. Despite lifesaving efforts, she died at a local hospital. She was 25 years old.
CHP says the driver, 22‑year‑old Alexander Alcocer, was under the influence of alcohol. The Reedley resident was arrested for DUI causing injury and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.
Investigators say the car had been driving recklessly in a nearby dirt lot before plunging into the canal. The crash remains under investigation.
