(KMJ) Californian voters this fall will decide whether to require proof of citizenship at the polls.
A Republican‑backed voter ID initiative has qualified for the November ballot, a major win for Assemblymember Carl DeMaio R-San Diego), who led the signature drive.
If approved, voters would need to show a government‑issued photo ID to vote in person, while mail‑in ballots would require the last four digits of an ID number.
Election officials would also be required to verify voter registration every time a ballot is cast. Currently, ID is only required when registering to vote.
Supporters say the measure would strengthen election integrity and note similar laws exist in most states. Opponents argue it would suppress turnout among poor and minority voters.
Labor unions and voting rights groups are preparing an aggressive campaign against the measure.
