(KMJ) As more and more accusations of sexual misconduct become public, calls for Rep. Eric Swalwell to exit the California race for Governor are gaining steam.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) and California’s democrat Senators Adam Schiff and Alex Padilla called for the congressman to exit the race following these “incredibly disturbing sexual assault accusations.”
“This is unacceptable of anyone — certainly not an elected official — and must be taken seriously,” the Democratic leaders wrote in a post on the social platform X on Friday.
“We commend the courageous women for sharing their experiences,” they continued. “In this and all circumstances, we must ensure that those who come forward with allegations of sexual assault are heard and respected. All perpetrators of sexual assault and harassment must be held accountable.”
The San Francisco Chronicle first reported that a woman who said she worked for Swalwell claimed he sexually assaulted her twice when she was too intoxicated to consent and sent her explicit photos via Snapchat while asking for nude photos in return.
At least four women have made claims against the Bay Area Congressman in recent days. Swalwell has denied all accusations.
Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Florida) is calling for Swalwell’s expulsion from the House.
Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi called for “full transparency and accountability” through an investigation into these accusations in a statement shared by her communications director on X.
“The young woman who has made serious allegations against Congressman Swalwell must be respected and heard,” Pelosi said in the statement.
