FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ/KFSN) A convicted murderer will spend 19 years to life in prison for a violent 2023 crash that killed 33‑year‑old Jesse Espino in Central Fresno.
36‑year‑old Shane Shahan sat silently in a Fresno County courtroom Tuesday as Espino’s family described their grief. His sister Crystal told the court her family “will never be the same” after losing her only sibling.
Shahan was found guilty last month, after jurors saw surveillance video showing him blowing through a red light at nearly 80 miles an hour at First and McKinley—slamming into Espino’s car. Video also showed Shahan looking back at the wreck before running away.
The judge noted Shahan never called 911, despite having a cellphone. Espino later died at the hospital.
Shahan—driving on a suspended license—has a long history of alcohol‑related driving crimes.
