MADERA, Calif. (KMJ/KFSN) — Big Brothers Big Sisters in Madera is being forced to relocate after learning that JBT Marel, the owner of the building it occupies on Industrial Avenue, is shutting down operations at the site.
“My heart sank. I can’t believe it. We’ve been in Madera serving Madera County for over 57 years,” said Diane with Big Brothers Big Sisters.
The nonprofit has long used the Industrial Avenue space to host back-to-school events, holiday toy drives and one-on-one mentorship activities.
According to the organization, it was informed of the closure on Wednesday, a move that now requires staff to find a new home for its programs.
“We serve children here. We serve Madera here,” Diane said.
More than 100 children from across Madera County regularly come to the location for mentorship services. Without a physical space, the nonprofit warns its critical programs could come to an end.
“In the room, you hear a bunch of laughter, hear each other talk about how their days have been. The bigs really just provide that friendship and guidance to our littles,” said Amanda with Big Brothers Big Sisters.
The building was renovated just a few years ago, with new floors, bathrooms and ceilings installed.
For decades, JBT Marel allowed Big Brothers Big Sisters to use the space rent-free, a benefit that enabled the organization to put more funding directly into its programs.
“The money that we were able to save to hire match support specialist that can serve the bigs and the littles in our program,” Diane said.
JBT Marel’s closure represents a second blow to the Madera community. An employee told Action News that a majority of the staff may be laid off.
The company says the decision is the result of a merger, calling it “as part of ongoing efforts to optimize its operational footprint.” JBT Marel said its Visalia location will remain open.
Now facing an uncertain future, Big Brothers Big Sisters in Madera is asking for community support.
“I have faith in this community. I know people care, especially if it’s for the children. I know we’re going to pull through, someway, somehow,” Diane said.
Big Brothers Big Sisters has until October 1 to relocate but until then, they’ll be figuring out their next steps.
