(KMJ) The Department of Justice has filed suit against California and a handful of other states, demanding access to sensitive voter data.
The Trump administration argues that this information is necessary to ensure states are maintaining accurate voter rolls, as required by federal law. The data sought includes voters’ names, addresses, party affiliations and more.
This issue of “inactive or ineligible voters” became a point of contention recently in the Fresno County Elections office. Supervisors Garry Bredefeld and Nathan Magsig discussed the situation recently on a social media video with Fresno County Elections chief James Kus: Watch here: https://fb.watch/CmCC2JEXAT/
“Clean voter rolls are the foundation of free and fair elections. Every state has a responsibility to ensure that voter registration records are accurate, accessible, and secure — states that don’t fulfill that obligation will see this Department of Justice in court,” Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a statement.
The DOJ’s lawsuit challenges California, New York, Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania and New Hampshire accusing them of violating the National Voter Registration Act and other federal laws.
