MENDOTA, Calif. (KMJ/KFSN) — Parents in the rural community of Mendota now have access to unique resources for their children that could shift their futures entirely.
Local leaders, parents, and community members celebrated a new beginning in Mendota on Wednesday morning.
The Fresno Economic Opportunities Commission opened the newest “Amor Early Head Start” site serving several rural families.
EOC CEO Steven Lewis says providing these spaces can make all the difference for children.
” If we could be of any help, we have to start here, we have to start here. We have to give these young Americans an opportunity because if we don’t, they are going to be left behind,” said EOC CEO Steven Lewis.
This facility on Belmont Avenue is the second Early Head Start site in Mendota, but the first serving ages zero to three.
Director Michael Balderas says an assessment determined a growing need in the community and is pleased these doors are now open.
” There is a need out here in Mendota because the community is growing and looking to expand those services, especially the zero to three,” said Head Start Director Michael Balderas.
Infants and toddlers in the program will have individualized attention and care.
Some benefiting from intentional curriculum, including school readiness goals.
” It’s going to be a great opportunity for him to start developing new skills and for him to interact with other kids,” said Aida Martinez.
Opportunities Lewis believes and hopes all children will have.
” Our young Americans, no matter what zip code they live in, deserve the opportunity of prosperity in the USA,” said Lewis.
A third site is underway in Mendota and expected to open next year.
