FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Nearly two years later, a Fresno family is getting closure following the death of their loved one, who died in a fire in April of 2023.
With deep breaths and tears, Kim Bennett read through her impact statement, reflecting on the pain she’s felt since losing her brother.
“He will never get to enjoy my grandkids or look forward to his. He will never make memories with his son,” said Eric Bennett’s sister.
Eric Bennett, 59 years old at the time, was unhoused and using a culvert for shelter when Felicia Quiroz set it on fire.
Investigators say Code Enforcement surveillance cameras captured the moment Quiroz used a lighter to start the fire and determined it was arson.
In court Thursday morning, the judge sentenced Quiroz to 15 years to life.
It’s a moment Kim and her family have been waiting for as they reflected on the man Eric was.
“He loved making people laugh with his great sense of humor, sharing his kind heart with those he loved. He had faults, but would be the first to help with what little he had,” said Kim.
Eric’s father and other family members also shared the challenges they’ve faced amid grief.
“What it’s done to me emotionally, when I go to bed, I want him back alive. I can picture him on fire, calling for help.”
Eric’s family ultimately forgives Quiroz, turning to their faith for healing.
“It’s very hard, but Felicia, I forgive you,” said Eric’s father.
Quiroz read an apology letter to Eric’s family, in which she stated she didn’t know he was in the culvert.
Her brother said a few words expressing the pain they feel as well, and emphasized the need to address mental health.
“Look what happens,” said Felicia’s brother. “You guys need to realize that mental health is real. I apologize to the family. Love you, sister.”
