President Donald Trump said Saturday that Elon Musk would face “very serious consequences” if he funds Democrat candidates leading up to next year’s midterm elections.
The fallout from Trump and Musk’s social media feud Thursday evening faded from headlines, but the political fallout could be felt for months.
In a Saturday phone interview with NBC News, Trump was asked about Musk’s moving his financial resources over to Democrats.
“If he does, he’ll have to pay the consequences for that,” Trump said. “He’ll have to pay very serious consequences if he does that.”
When asked if Trump had any desire to mend his relationship with Musk, the president answered, “no,” adding that his relationship with the Tesla CEO was probably over.
Trump said he had “no intention of speaking” to Musk and that his actions over the past week were “very disrespectful” to the office of the president.
During Thursday’s dispute, Trump posted on his Truth Social platform, “The easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars, is to terminate Elon’s Governmental Subsidies and Contracts.”
Asked about his intentions Saturday the president said, “I mean it’s not something that’s on top of my mind right now.”
House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said Friday that the country would benefit from Trump and Musk finding a place of reconciliation but that would have no bearing on where his loyalty lands.
“Do not doubt, do not second-guess, and don’t ever challenge the president of the United States, Donald Trump,” Johnson said. “He is the leader of the party.
“He is the most consequential political figure of this generation and probably the modern era. And he’s doing an excellent job for the people.”
Trump told NBC News on Saturday, “The Republican Party has never been united like this before. It’s never been. It’s actually more so than it was three days ago.”
