FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ/KFSN) — A man is in custody following a standoff in East Central Fresno, where shots were fired by a Fresno Police officer.

The incident began near Turner and Recreation avenues, just south of Belmont Avenue, at about 7 p.m. Sunday.

Officers went out there as part of a follow-up investigation regarding a traffic stop of a wanted parolee that happened Friday night.

After confirming the man was at the friend’s home, they set up a perimeter. He tried to escape from the home on foot and during that time, officers observed the suspect had a firearm in his hand.

A SWAT standoff unfolded in East Central Fresno after police opened fire on a suspect near Turner and Recreation avenues.

Video sent to us from an ABC30 insider then shows the suspect in a vehicle trying to escape and even driving into fences at neighboring homes. That’s when shots were fired by one officer.

The suspect was not injured but barricaded himself inside the vehicle in a neighbor’s backyard. Officers finally got him to surrender shortly after 11:30 pm.

The man was arrested and has not yet been identified. Police say he was on parole for firearm and domestic violence charges.

Fresno Police Chief Mindy Casto says he expected to face multiple charges.

“He’s a convicted felon in possession of a firearm… so that, and there’s parole violation charges, there’s charges for brandishing a firearm at police officers, and I believe because he pointed it at some point in time, it’s also an assault with a deadly weapon,” Casto said.

The officer who fired his weapon has been with the department since October 2022.

He will be put on administrative leave pending the investigation.
