Nation Focuses on Trans Athlete at Track Championships in Clovis

CLOVIS, CA (KMJ) The firestorm over a biological boy participating in the CIF State Track Championships heads to Clovis next. Buchanan High will host the meet Friday and Saturday. But with so much attention, is the city prepared of what might come? KMJ’s Blake Taylor asked Clovis Mayor Pro Tem Diane Pearce:

Assemblyman David Tangipa (R-Clovis) joined KMJ’s Broeske & Musson to sound off on the situation saying “the state of California knows it’s wrong”.

In a post this week on Truth Social, President Trump said local law enforcement may need to step in to prevent the trans athlete from participating. That athlete, AB Martinez is from Jurupa Valley, and is the favorite to win the long jump and triple jump competitions.

While the law allowing trans kids to participate in girls’ sports was signed by former Gov. Jerry Brown, his successor, Gavin Newsom said recently on his podcast that it’s “deeply unfair”. Yet Newsom is backing the CIF’s sudden rule change to allow one more female to advance to the next round if beaten in a contest by a biological male.

The governor’s office issued a statement saying the California Interscholastic Federation rule change was a “thoughtful approach. CIF’s proposed pilot is a reasonable, respectful way to navigate a complex issue without compromising competitive fairness — a model worth pursuing,” Newsom’s spokesperson said.
