Gov. Gavin Newsom held a news conference this week in which he dangled a $3 BILLION carrot to clean up homeless camps in California.
“No more excuses,” the Governor said in a tough talking statement. “It is time to take back the streets. It’s time to take back the sidewalks. It’s time to take these encampments and provide alternatives.”
Wait, how long has he been in office? NOW it’s suddenly a problem for him? California has more than 187,000 people on the streets – that’s a quarter of the entire U.S. homeless population!

An audit recently found that the state spent $24 billion on more more than 30 homeless and housing programs between 2018 and 2023, but is unable show any measurable positive results.
Michael Shellenberger posted on X “Local governments, not Gov. Gavin Newsom, increased homelessness in California to its all-time high, he says. Nonsense. As SF mayor, he enabled addiction, crime & homelessness. As governor, he spent $37B to increase it by 24%, and raise violent crime to 31% over national average.”
