VISALIA, Calif. (KMJ/KFSN) — A weekend hit and run in Visalia on Akers and Judy claimed the life of 53-year-old Victor Castro.
Victor’s family shares they are heartbroken by the tragedy and say he had six grandchildren, two adult daughters, and a teenage son.
Visalia Police say 33-year-old James Hand is believed to be the one driving the Ford F-150 that hit Victor on Saturday night.
“The suspect vehicle fled the scene before officers arrived and the 53-year-old victim was transported to the hospital with serious injuries, and unfortunately, he passed away the following day,” says Liz Jones with the Visalia Police Department.
It took officers a few days to track down the suspect.
Hand was arrested in Visalia, he was booked for vehicular manslaughter and hit and run.
His truck was found in Delano thanks to tips from the community.
“Just releasing the photo, the community helped so much by calling into the police department, sending photos and videos, emailing them, and through social media. So we are ver,y very thankful for our community because they brought this case together, helping out our traffic unit solve the case,” explains Jones.
Victor’s two eldest daughters shared that they are devastated over their dad’s passing.
In a statement, they say:
“My dad was the kind of man who showed up for everyone, generous and full of quiet strength. His sudden passing leaves a space that can never be filled, but his legacy of love and selflessness will live on in everyone he touched.”
Victor’s youngest son is 16. He lost his mother as a toddler and is now without parents.
He shares:
“My dad was kind and loving and would give his shirt off his back. I love him so much and will miss him with my whole heart.”
The suspect is expected to appear in court on Thursday afternoon.
