FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ/KFSN) — A man is in custody after an hours-long standoff with police in downtown Fresno.

Officers were called to the area of Kern and M Street at about 7 am Friday for a man swinging a six-foot-long metal pipe.

The suspect then barricaded himself in the post office and refused to come out.

The roads in the area were closed.

Two women working in the Post Office were able to get out of the building safely, and employees of the neighboring FedEx store were told not to come into work.

After around two hours, the barricaded man started to come out for negotiating officers, who ultimately ended up using non-lethal rounds to take him into custody.

He was taken away in an ambulance to be treated for bruising before being booked into the Fresno County Jail.

No one was injured in the incident, which was happening across from the Valdez Hall as hundreds gathered for an event Friday morning.
