Newsom Cancels Christmas Tree Lighting, Avoids Pro-Palestinian Protest

SACRAMENTO, CA (KMJ) Governor Gavin Newsom abruptly canceled the annual live public Christmas tree lighting at the state capitol on Tuesday because of “protests across the country.”

Some pro-Palestinian protests have become violent or disrupted the annual lightings of the giant Christmas trees at Rockefeller Center in recent days. The Sacramento Regional Coalition for Palestinian Rights had reportedly planned to march to the state Capitol Tuesday night.

The pro-Palestinian group told KCRA 3 it wanted to “out Gov. Gavin Newsom for hiding from the public because he doesn’t want to face their anger at his shameful stance in regard to the genocide in Gaza.”

“The ceremony this year will be virtual,” a Newsom spokesperson said.
