A ruling about a south valley bakery that didn’t go its way apparently left a bad taste in the mouth of the State of California.
The California Civil Rights Department and the Attorney General’s Office are appealing a ruling that the owner of Tastries Bakery in Bakersfield was within her rights to deny a wedding cake order from a lesbian couple because of her religious views.
The story made national news when it broke in 2018.
In Monday’s news release, the state claimed Kern Superior Court Judge Eric Bradshaw ignored the discrimination claim and incorrectly ruled the cake was protected under First Amendment – among other issues.
In the release, CRD Acting Director Mary Wheat said “Refusal to provide equal access to goods and services is against the law. I encourage all Californians who believe their civil rights have been violated to reach out to our office and work with us in fighting for your rights.”
Miller’s lawyer tells Bakersfield.com he believes Bradshaw’s ruling was thorough and comprehensive, and that the appeal will be rejected “based on his ruling alone.”
