Man Arrested in Connection to 2021 Homicide in Fresno

FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ/FOX26) — Undercover officers with the Fresno Police Department arrested a man in connection to a 2021 homicide in Fresno on Thursday.

The arrest happened around 11:30 a.m. near Butler and Maple Avenues in Fresno.

34-year-old Cory Smith was fatally shot near Pierce and Montecito Avenues following a failed robbery and attempted carjacking on March 1, 2021.

After a year-long investigation, detectives identified 32-year-old Michael Fitch as the suspect involved in the murder.

An arrest warrant was issued for Fitch’s arrest earlier this month and undercover detectives with the Street Violence Bureau located Fitch on Thursday and took him into custody.

Fitch was armed with a handgun during this arrest but was taken into custody without any incident.

Fitch has an extensive criminal history, and he will be booked at the Fresno County Jail on murder charges.

A second man was taken into custody on Thursday but it’s unknown what his connection is at this time.
