(KMJ) We’re now learning more details on the deadly officer-involved shooting inside Fresno Police headquarters Tuesday afternoon.

Here are the details as released by the Fresno Police Department:

At approximately 11:42 a.m., a male adult entered the Fresno Police Department Headquarters Annex from an unknown entry point. The suspect made his way into a detective’s office located on the first floor. For reasons still unknown, the suspect began physically assaulting our detective.

The suspect grabbed a sharp object during the physical altercation and stabbed the detective in the head several times. The detective armed himself with his firearm and discharged it at the suspect. The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Our detective was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was treated for his injuries. Our detective suffered one puncture wound to the top of his head, a large laceration starting from the top of his head
down the right side of his face, and a concussion. He has been released from the hospital.

Detectives have identified the suspect as 24-year-old Joseph Roy. Information obtained thus far in the investigation has revealed that Roy attended a court hearing before the officer-involved shooting. This
court hearing was related to an assault with a deadly weapon case where Roy was a suspect in June, 2021.

The motive for the assault on our detective has still not been determined. Detectives are working on collecting surveillance video footage from areas in and around our department headquarters.
