Merced Man Killed in Highway 99 Median Strip Identified

MERCED, CA (KMJ) – A Merced man who died in the center median of Highway 99 has been identified.

The Fresno County Coroner says it was 27-year-old Daniel Davis who died on Monday.

The Fresno CHP says it was around 4:00 p.m. and there was heavy rainfall at the time when they received a call of a two-car accident on northbound Highway 99.

It’s unknown why Davis stopped his Hyundai Sonata in the center median north of Floral Avenue.

A 65-year-old man from Warner Springs who was driving a Ford F-250 northbound on Highway 99 could not stop in time to avoid the backed-up traffic, and the CHP says the motorist swerved into the center median and crashed into Davis’s car.

The CHP says Davis was not wearing his seatbelt and died at the scene.

The CHP says alcohol and/or drugs do not appear to be a factor.

The investigation is ongoing.
