CLOVIS, CA (KMJ)  — Clovis police pulled a car over with two suspected mail thieves inside on Wednesday.

Police got a call around 10:15 a.m. about suspicious activity and possible mail theft that had just occurred near Nees and Sunnyside Avenues.

The person gave the police a description and directions.

When they tried to pull the car over, the driver took off and got on Hwy 168.

Police say the people in the car were throwing out handfuls of mail along the way.

The vehicle started smoking on Hwy 168 and slowed a bit allowing police to use a maneuver called a PIT (Pursuit Intervention Technique) to spin the car out.

The two were later identified as Tara Burcher and Dallas Johnson. Both are from Fresno and were arrested on multiple charges.

Clovis PD says Johnson is on parole for robbery and had an active warrant for her arrest. Both Johnson and Burcher were booked into the Fresno County Jail.

“Mail theft is on the rise,” said Clovis Police in a statement. “We encourage community members to check their mail regularly and call our dispatch center to report suspicious activity.”
