(KMJ) – Fresno County Sheriff’s Investigators are still trying to figure out what motivated a Sanger man to stab a 70-year old woman.

Here are the circumstances of the case according to a Sheriff’s Office News Release:

Just before 1:30 p.m. Monday, Sheriff’s dispatchers received a call of a stabbing on the 3600 block of South Greenwood Ave. in Sanger. The victim, a 70 year old woman, had recently arrived home with 46-year old Jose Castro.

The two had spent the earlier part of the day together in a car. Once they got home, they found Cal Fire extinguishing a fire in the area. The woman stood by and watched firefighters work. For an unknown reason, Castro walked up behind the woman and began stabbing her in the torso.

Castro ran away as two of the victim’s family members chased him down the street and took him to the ground. They were able to hold him down until deputies arrived and arrested him.

The woman is in the hospital and her injuries are considered life-threatening.

The relationship between the suspect and victim is that she is the mother of Castro’s brother’s girlfriend.

Jose Castro was booked on a charge of attempted murder and his bail was set at $500,000.
