FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — The Golden State has taken another step toward letting 17-year-olds vote in primary and special elections, if they’ll be 18, prior to the following general election.
The proposed constitutional amendment has cleared the Assembly 57-13.
It must now be approved by two-thirds of state senators, before voters have a say in March.
Supporters claim allowing more young people to vote would be empowering, while opponents say there’s an ulterior motive to attract more left-leaning voters.
California already allows 16-year-olds to pre-register to take part in the democratic process.
