FRESNO (KMJ) — The continued presence of the flu in the Central Valley has prompted Fresno County Department of Public Health to extend flu season by one month.

Instead of the official end-date of March 31st, officials announced Wednesday that it will come to an end on April 30th. The alert’s central message was that influenza is still spreading and residents should take steps to protect themselves.

“It is not too late to be vaccinated. Influenza activity in Fresno County is still elevated. Residents should continue taking precautions to avoid getting sick,” said Deputy Health Officer Mercy Kagoda.

“Getting vaccinated decreases risk of severe illness.”

The Department of Public Health’s recommendation is that everyone 6 months or older should have an annual flu shot. Those considered a high risk of developing the illness include people with chronic medical conditions, pregnant women, and anyone aged 65 years and older.
