Stanislaus Co. Sheriff’s Deputy Killed During Chase Near Modesto

FRESNO, CA (KMJ) – A Stanislaus Co. Sheriff’s deputy died during a chase involving a man with at least three prior DUI convictions in the last nine years, investigators confirmed early Monday morning.

Investigators said deputies were called to the intersection of Oakdale Rd. and Patterson Rd. in Riverbank, just outside Modesto, around 9:45 p.m. Sunday. Callers reported the driver of a Cadillac Escalade passed out behind the wheel. When deputies arrived, officials said the driver, identified as 30-year-old Jonathan Carillo-Gonzalez, sped away. Deputies put down spike strips during the chase, and the SUV stopped at Fine Ave. and Cambridge Ct. in Modesto. Deputies said Carillo-Gonzalez got out and started fighting with law enforcement, and deputies used a bean bag gun to subdue him.

During the chase, people called 911 to report a patrol vehicle crashed into a power pole at Terminal Ave. and Claribel Rd. in Riverbank. First responders tried to rescue Deputy Antonio “Tony” Hinostroza, but they said he died from his injuries at the scene.

Deputy Hinostroza was a 19-year veteran with the Stanislaus Co. Sheriff’s Office. He was hired in 1999 and has served as a K-9 handler, gang detective, SWAT team member and Field Training Officer (FTO). Hinostroza also served as a U.S. Marine from 1992-1996. He leaves behind an adult son.

Detectives said Carrill-Gonzalez was arrested on charges including driving under the influence (DUI), felony evasion, and resisting arrest. They said his license was suspended in June 2018 for DUI, and he had at least three prior DUI convictions in the past nine years.
