FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — Gov. Jerry Brown is pushing for another tax increase, in an effort to overhaul the state’s 911 emergency services infrastructure.
He’s asking lawmakers to scrap an existing tax on in-state phone calls, and implement a flat fee on all phones capable of dialing 911.
It’s expected to be around 34 cents a line, which would generate around $175 million a year.
California’s 911 system dates back to the 60s, and five years ago, the California Technology Agency reported that many of the network’s radio parts have been discontinued by their manufacturer.
