FRESNO, CA (KMJ) – Two gubernatorial candidates visit the Central Valley hoping to gather more Valley votes before the June 5th California Primary.
John Cox is endorsed by Fresno County Republican Party, and the headquarters on Shaw Avenue was a stop for his Unity Tour on Tuesday.
Cox appeared with AG candidate Steven Bailey, and supporters as he made his promise to make public safety his number one priority.
Cox, speaking of the state’s poverty rate said that the American dream “is being denied to so many Californians.”
“That’s what I’m running for Governor to do,” said Cox, “restore the California Dream, restore the opportunity that all Californians deserve.”
Republican candidate Cox got President Trump’s approval but the endorsement of Fresno’s Police Chief Jerry Dyer went to Democratic candidate Antonio Villaraigosa.
Dyer announcing he was backing Villaraigosa on Tuesday afternoon.
“I was speaker of the California State Assembly and I took on the issue of public safety. I was mayor of a city that had one of the highest crime rates in the United States, and while I was mayor we reduced violent crime by 49 percent,” said Villaraigosa.
Villaraigosa, the former Los Angeles mayor, was also visiting the Central Valley, stopping at Roosevelt High School, where he participated in a round table discussion.
Both Cox and Villaraigosa are among the top candidates, up against Current Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom – the current front runner in the race for Governor Brown’s soon-to-be vacant seat.
