Overall Crime Down In Fresno, Police Seeing Uptick In Car Break-ins

FRESNO, CA (KMJ) – Overall Crime is down in Fresno, but police are seeing more car break-ins.

On Wednesday, Fresno’s Police Chief Jerry Dyer released crime watch trends for April 2018 which showed overall crime is continuing to drop in the city.

Chief Dyer said there’s been a 30 percent reduction in shootings, year-to-date. There were 29 shooting in 28 days, of those 14 were gang involved.

Chief Dyer said the most notable decrease was the reduction in homicides by 47 percent. There were nine homicides this year, compared to the 17 in 2017.

Dyer said violent crime is also down 13 percent, year to date.

“What that means is that year-to-date there were 105 fewer victims of violent crime in our city this year as opposed to last year,” said Chief Dyer. “There’s 1117 fewer victims of property crime, this year, so that’s good news for the citizens of Fresno.”

Chief Dyer says people continue to call in tips and assist police in their crime fighting efforts.

The crimes that Chief Dyer said impacts citizens most often are burglaries and auto thefts, both down by around a third.

Police are seeing an uptick in car break-ins, especially in Fresno’s Tower District, so Chief Dyer reminds residents to hide valuables even cell phone chargers and coins.
